"I am not sure how many of us here are vegetarians, but perhaps most of us consume meat and there is an inconvenient problem with meat. First, it is very inefficient because by the time the calories move up the food chain, there are a lot of losses and is not a very efficient process..." - Dr. Balakrishnan, Cabinet Minister in Singapore

What the research says...

UN: A substantial reduction of impacts would only be possible with a substantial worldwide diet change.

UN-FAO: GHG emissions of meat production is globally 14.5%.  More than all transportation combined globally.

International Livestock Research Institute: 45% of the land mass on Earth now used by livestock and feed crops

UN-FAO: Livestock is responsible for 65% of all emissions of nitrous oxide (a greenhouse gas with 250x more global warming potential than CO2 per molecule).

US EPA: One hamburger requires 660 gallons of water to produce – the equivalent of 2 months’ of showers.  Scarcity of fresh water is expected to be one of the top world drivers of political instability.

US EPA: A farm with 2,500 dairy cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people.

UN: 3/4 of the world’s fisheries are exploited.

World Bank: Animal agriculture the cause of 91% of Amazon rainforest destruction are livestock and their feedcrops.
